LONG POST: On November 7th, we brought home this adorable, spunky, sweet girl named Juniper. I didn’t post about it at the time because we wanted to see if she was going get along with Grif before she became a permanent member of the family. - On the 15th, before she was even “official,” Junie had a fever and stopped eating. We took her to the emergency vet, then our regular vet. They said it was just an infection & gave antibiotics & fluids. She seemed to get better. - A week later, we were back at the vet. She’d stopped eating again. They did x-rays, tried to figure out if she’d eaten something bad. After many inconclusive tests, they suggested exploratory surgery. We decided to wait. - The next day, it was clear she couldn’t breathe. Her nose was running, her eyes were red, she was breathing hard & fast. Back to the vet, more x-rays - her lungs had filled up overnight. - Juniper was hospitalized while we waited for her tests to come back. Antibiotics, IV fluids, and rest. She didn’t eat for a week and a half. The day after Thanksgiving, we got the news: positive for Distemper. - Only about 50% of dogs with distemper live. Worse, a dog can appear to get better then get much worse because the virus hides in the nervous system. Half the dogs who live through the respiratory symptoms get neurological symptoms like tremors, tics, and seizures. That usually happens 1 - 3 weeks after respiratory symptoms clear but can happen months and even years later. - Juniper is home now. She’s almost back to her old self - begging for pets and giving tons of snuggles. She’s eating, drinking, and breathing well. But she could get worse any day. The disease could progress. It’s a coin flip - she could be fine; she could be gone before Christmas. - We don’t know what will happen. I’m trying to be grateful for the good days we’re having. She’s a fighter, just like her adopted brother Grif, and we’re fighting with her. I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle and trying to stay positive in the face of a guarded prognosis. - But even if the worst happens, however long we have, I’m glad she came into our lives. She’s part of our family no matter what’s next In 2014, we said let’s meet again in 5 years at Galgorm. We fulfilled our pact (with @_tshields playing the part of @jcampbell458)! Check the last two pics to see how much we’ve aged Mom & I went to Versailles! It’s incredibly gorgeous but too big to do in a day (plus we got lost & had a run in with some bitchy French guards). Worth it to see what feels like real life Disneyland. Not quite sure how to organize my photos from France so here’s a bunch of cool art we saw. My favorite museum? Whichever one I was in at the time. I don’t know why I’m so terrible at posting travel pics when they happen. I feel too busy at the time, even when I’m scrolling IG at night, then I get home and the prospect of going through a thousand photos seems exhausting. It becomes a to-do, like unpacking, and it’s tedious. So then I wait until right before another adventure, when I know I’ll feel crappy about not posting, and spend an hour agonizing about how to condense a couple weeks into just 10 photos. It’s honestly ridiculous. Anyway, this is the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Fun way to spend a long layover! Made by a wonderful friend to commemorate my favorite day ever Happy anniversary to my favorite person! ❤️ In Paris with Mom! Saw the Musée de l'Orangerie (all the greats of Impressionism), the Eiffel Tower, and Napoleon’s Tomb. Feeling very 🇫🇷!
